d3o surf armor??

I would like to know if there is any d3o products out that help protect surfers. Most people wouldnt think surfing is a high impact sport but it really is. We surfers are always getting pounded by huge swells, slammed into piers and reefs. Or just dragged and slammed down to the bottom. Infact a board geting caught up in a wave and hittin the surfer can cause alot of damage. A well placed hit to the shoulder, back or leg is extremely painful.

So are there any suits like wet suits, rashgaurds or other apperal that will help protect a surfer like myself?
If not, would it be hard to design a suit or rashgaurd like that. I can easily tell you the best places the tech would be most effective.

d3o ballet shoes

Pointe shoes have not been redesigned for 400 years and are traditionally made of paper, hessian and paste before being dried to become very hard.

The effect is that dancers` feet become damaged over time, because their feet take the shape of the shoe.

The Capulet Juliet D3o pointe shoe has been created using material from D3o, which is flexible but becomes hard on impact.

D3o has been showcased in the past for its ability to withstand considerable force, such as being hit with an object.

Michael Thoraval, who originated the Capulet shoe, said the theory behind it was that "the shoe takes the shape of the foot".

He told Sky News Online: "It is very flexible when you want it to be but when you want it to be hard it is also hard.

"Everbody was complaining about the shoes and everybody accepted it. Nobody tried to look at the shoe and how we could make it better."

Mr Thoraval said that the shoe would not suit every dancer, but in international testing 199 out of 250 dancers had been delighted with it.

He said he had been keen to develop a more flexible shoe and approached D3o after reading about the company three years ago. It took two years to develop the product.

Sky News Online gave a pair of D3o`s ballet shoes to former Elizabeth Foster, for evaluation.

Ms Foster said: "They seem very comfortable, much more so than anything I used to wear.

"At certain times the block should be hard and at others it needs to be flexible. These shoes are built in a different way so it would appear they can do both.

"The issues of flexibility mean that professional dancers might change their shoes two or three times within a performance. A potential plus point of these ones is that maybe you would not have to do that.

Ms Foster explained the long standing and quirky tradition that exists with dancers and their shoes, which is based on the shoes fitting individuals` feet perfectly.

"Dancers do crazy things with their shoes, like sleeping in them, shutting them in doors and stamping on them, to soften them so that they are really your own. What D3o seem to be saying is that their shoes can be your own, without all of that palaver."

D3o said: "The shoe is a real innovation in the dance industry, and makes a real difference to the performer.

"The problems dancers face with the traditional pointe is exactly the kind of problem we want to overcome at d3o, so they can concentrate on their performance to their maximum potential without being restricted by their equipment.

"It`s all about allowing athletes to do what they do more effectively".

sounds awesome dunnit?

Hello, I`m Raudel, I`m from Canary islands, Spain y I`m a rollerblader.

I really intersting in d3o, friends and the comunity of our sport are interesting too.

The products that we more use are the knee protection and shorts, although the protection for the head too, but here the weather is really hot all the year and I was thinking that could be good idea to create, for example, a Cap with d3o, like New era, something like this because the bennies are imposible to use with the sun all day.

I would like to see something like that, but I`m sure that you think about this yet.

Good luck, Raudel M.

The oldest man ever to summit Everest!

Now, few people can rival Kenton on Everest achievements but one guy is coming pretty close! Seventy-five-year-old Japanese skier Yuichiro Miura has started his latest bid to climb Mount Everest to reclaim his title from fellow Japanese climber Katsusuke Yanagisawa who took the title from Yuichiro last year at the age of 71.

Famed as the skier in the 1970s flick, The Man Who Skied Down Everest, Miura hoped to summit Everest again yesterday to become the oldest person to climb the world’s highest peak.

I haven`t found news of whether the summit has been achieved but mounteverest.net website
seems to be kept pretty up to date so i`ll be keeping a close eye out and will relate the news as soon as I found out!

Lance has joined forces with general manager Craig Stanley and Trek bicycles to bring to life a 18,000 sq ft bike shop with a built in coffee shop on the corner of Fourth and Nueces in downtown Austin, in an attempt to put the city on the map for bicyclists.

NISSAN UCI Mountain Bike World Cup

The 2008 Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup series is now well under way for another year - woohoo! Last weekend (10th/11th) saw the Slovenian town of Maribor hold the 1st double event of the season playing host to some nail bitingly close downhill and 4X action.

Maribor returned to the Nissan UCI World Cup calendar in 2007 after a 4-year break, but despite its absence from the series, it was voted second best downhill and 4X organizer at the end of last season.

Before Maribor the World cup has already visited Manavgat (TUR), Houffalize (BE), Offenburg (DE), and Madrid (ES).

Results

Maribor’s big events were the men’s and women’s elite downhill and 4X. In 1st the downhill event of 2008 Samuel Hill (AUS) took 1st place for the guys with 661 rider Steve Peat taking 3rd place for the UK team! Sabrina Jonnier (FR) took 1st in the women’s elite followed extremely closely by UK team member Rachel Atherton coming in just 0.18 seconds behind! In the 4X the Spanish team led by Rafael Alvarez De Lara Lucas took 1st place with a time of 54.19, with MSR (MS-Intense factory racing) taking 1st place in the elite women’s in 59.21.

Next stop for the series is Vallenord (AND) for the first triple event of the season taking place at the end this month.

Check out the UCI international website
for results and news on all events happening in the series this summer.

Dont know if your base layers already have it, only got a brief look at them when you guys were showing off the kit at BUSC a couple of weeks ago, but in light of my injury woud recommend trying to put some pads around the sides of the torso and under arms as as far as i know broken ribs are quite common injuries. Dont know whether it would work but i assume it is something that could not be done with traditional plastic body protection but might be possible with your product due its flexibility and comfort?

Day 1: We arrived in Hinterglemm in driving snow about 1pm yesterday morning after a mammoth trip with a `neverlost` sat nav that never worked meaning we resorted to the old skool map and go style. With Chrissy M at the wheel and the navigation demon George on directions we made good time in some shocking mountain conditions! Thankfully the hotel room had a hot shower, warm beds and a killer brekkie so we were happy!

Yesterday we went up the mountain with the shovels watching the dual slalom. With weather conditions causing most events to be called off the action moved down to the town`s bars and by gum these students can do apres ski! So much so some even forget the ski! The shovels and goo went down a storm and the town of Hinterglemm is now truly covered in d3o stickers - so much so we nearly were thrown out of a bar who`s owner did not appreciate d3o stickers on his ceiling - there were UV lights and the stickers looked so cool!!

Today is the big d3o King of the Hill event so bring on the blue skies and brilliant conditions so some hair raising racing!!

Right, where are those stickers? Tagging me thinks!!

Nissan O’Neill Xtreme Verbier

Hey everyone!

The finals of the Nissan O’Neill Freeride tour took place this weekend (14th – 16th) and having a look at the videos online at their website
 it looks pretty cool!

For the 13th edition, since it started in 1996, the “Xtreme” is considered the most prestigious event in the Freeride world. For the “grande finale” of the Freeride World Tour the elite of Freeride tackled the mythical North Face of the Bec des Rosses, a dauntingly steep and frighteningly jagged 500 m rock-face.

The Bec des Rosses presents in places some 55° sheer slopes. In an upright position one could nearly lean on the face with one`s elbow. With steep and narrow couloirs, high rock cliffs, changing snow and terrain, it asks the riders to be particularly skilled with top physical condition, thorough mountain experience, and top placements in the previous contests.

Around 5000 spectators joined the riders at one of the most beautiful natural arenas of the Alps, the Col des Gentianes in Verbier.

After this final event, the four Freeride World Champions (ski/snowboard/men/women) have been crowned. The Tour is endowed with a purse of $300,000, the highest sum ever to be paid in ski or snowboard freeride contests.

So the winners of the Nissan O’Neill Xtreme Verbier are….drum roll please….!

Skiers: Kaj Zackrisson (Swe), Elyse Saugstad (USA). Snowboarders: Cyril Neri (Sui), Ruth Leisibach (Sui)

And taking the World titles to be the Four Freeride World Champions of 2008:

Ski: Henrik Windstedt (Swe), Elyse Saugstad (USA).
Snowboard: Xavier de le Rue (Fra), Ruth Leisibach (Sui).

Check out the website for more info on the event and series at http://www.freerideworldtour.com/en/

Review 2

After reviewing the awesome prototype kneepads, I thought I would review a more commercial product, the Quiksilver Bartik beanie which utilities the immense abilities of d3o to create a protective yet comfy and damn stylish piece of revolutionary headgear.
As a d3o athlete of extreme sports, I fulfilled that title and engaged in some extreme sports, well 1 really, that which has already been performed by the legendary Richard Palmer, the shovel test, after viewing the video on youtube.com and the d3olab.com site, I decided to test the authenticity of it, hence I would conduct my own test. So on my brothers birthday, the 28th of February, I gave him my present, a shovel. Unsure with the specific use, he questioned me, `why the hell you give me your bike shovel, I would of rather had a tenner?!` I excitedly replied, `well Levi, my birthday present to you is to let you smack me over the head with a shovel.` he was then very happy with his birthday present. I went to fetch my beanie, but I was rather nervous, not the usual trait of an adrenaline junkie but nervous I was, this was because prior to this shovel test, Matt Cardiff and myself had been punching each other in the head, allow - it was a Saturday and we weren`t in Hampstead, and we ran out of fireworks. After 1 or two light weight punches we went into the use of our martial art principles, I used the infamous Israeli self defence technique of KravMaga, whereas Matt used street fighting. I palmed and elbowed Matt on the head, and he had straight punched me, after a couple of blows we were begging for the paracetamol, although, we had been hitting with a minute surface area, therefore creating less space for which the d3o can be effective over, and shovels with a meter-squared of surface area should provide more area for d3o to be affected, reducing the trauma of the blow. We went outside and got set up. Unfortunately my video camera was in for repair so it was just photographs to provide evidence for the test. So my brother lifted the shovel above his head and smashed on it my noggin, should of worn the beanie, jokez, I felt the impact as like being punched while being protected by a pillow, there was no pain and no concussion and fortunately I did not have to break out the paracetamol. Excellent! I believe the reason that the beanie will not protect as well from smaller objects such as fists than large ones, such as my digging shovel is because that the structure, Not molecular structure but the shape of the material, i.e. The kneepads were flat planes of d3o whereas the beanie contained rather cylindrical shapes, and so with flat planes, there is complete protection, so all objects striking the knee will encounter d3o like flying rocks or branches in mountain biking and in the event of a crash, the ground, whereas the cylindrical shape of the beanie`s padding is designed for impacts with large objects, i.e. Ice or snow in a crash, and smaller objects fit through the gaps in between the cylinders of black, or really orange magic as it were. The beanie is slightly heavy, but lighter than a helmet, and way comfier. The beanie is really a testament to the awesome ability of d3o, for example, placing a 8 millimetre sheet behind Kevlar in bulletproof vests will stop the blunt force trauma associated with the rapid slowing down of a missile connecting with the vest, I would like to say that as a conclusion, the use of nano-technology is apparent and proven, and to coin a copyrighted phrase, `the future`s bright, the future`s orange` by the way, Mr. Richard Palmer, if your reading this, you were just that little bit late with the slogan, damn you Orange Telecom!

Dear readers,
I would like to just say how incredible d3o is! I went away unexpectedly over the weekend to Paris for personal reasons, and after riding I didn`t have time to take off the knee pads, so I was wearing them for about 18 hours straight! And the skintight Lycra/spandex combination makes sure the knee pads never slipped down. I of course was testing the d3o prototype kneepads. The way they are sewn and stitched is that there are no seams on the back of the knee, which in personal experiences is the worst place to put a seam as it becomes terribly itchy. So, i wore the kneepads to paris, and they were so comfy and warm I forgot all about them! Great! But that is not the real success of the kneepads, the main thing about these spandex socks is the section of d3o in the frontal knee area. d3o is so light and pliable that the bending of the knee is natural and uncompromising and does not interfere with natural bodily function, i.e. I can still run to catch the train with the kneepads. Now to the fun bit, the protective ability of d3o is so incredible it is scary, those who have hit me with it on believe it is witchcraft or the like, and because they don`t know what d3o is, they would be considered right. As I was fortunately stuck wearing the kneepads, I would test the mystical technology. Since I had not had a crash while mountain biking with the pads on, a rare occurrence as anybody from ProjectMAX will tell you, maybe the pads prevent crashing, then again no, I thought I would have to directly attack my knee. I tried slamming my knee in to brick walls but i would always pull my weight back from natural instincts, but when I invited my brothers and their friends to hit me, they didn`t think twice! However, they didn`t know I had divine prevention on my knees, and when i gave them a plastic lunch tray they did not hesitate to run and hit my knee, enough times to create a massive dent in the tray, good news that we disposed of it quickly enough before an annoying Disney character tried to charge me. If the tray wasnt enough of a demonstration, a sizable two-by-four was sourced, that eventually became massively dented after trying to attack my invincible knee caps. The piez-de-resistance was a Disney brand baseball bat we purchased for £2, forget my brothers, I found the burliest man in Disneyland, and since this was paris, neonazists were everywhere! I asked one of him to take out all of his anger against my faith on my kneecap, and he happily obliged. So i sit there knee bent, with a skinhead wailing on my knee, getting dirty looks from everyone, too bad my phone broke other wise it would of made a great video. Eventually 3 minutes later after losing interest and plugging in my mp3 player I hear a snapping sound and see this thug standing with a baseball bat but in two parts. I will write up a full in-sport review when i have tested them, hopefully this weekend.
Since d3o doesn`t have a use limit, it can be used repeatedly, as i proved. I believe that from what i experienced, d3o will be in injury prevention wear in the near future.

ISPO Report

Ok…. finally the ISPO dust has settled, the stand has been shipped back and all 7.5 tonnes uploaded, the spades are back in their usual place and we’re still buzzing from an awesome show!

Apologies for being unable to blog while we were away, I was having some technical difficulties (it wouldn’t post), which, combined with a poor, unreliable Internet connection did not bode well!

The show was a great success and I have to say a massive thanks and well done to all the d3o team members who were there and made it possible as well as all the d3oteam.com athletes who contributed to the athletes wall with photos and images, and the athlete video with their footage. I’m sure you’ve all seen the video on the Podcast page but it really does look really cool and is testament to you guys –thank you!

The ‘A’ team, as we liked to be called – Ruth, Charlotte, John, Nim, James and I – all headed out to Munich a few days early so that we had enough time to build the stand. We arrived bright and early the first day to find to our horror that our actual stand (all the components to make it up) were still sitting on the lorry we had loaded a few days earlier, all 7.5 tonnes! After commandeering a fork lift and multiple (hundreds of) shuttle runs with mannequins, coffee machines, plasma screens and bean bags we had unloaded the stand. Now to build it – simple?? It took us two very long days – finally leaving at 1am on Saturday night, but it looked awesome and we were all up for a good show.

The actual trade show – ISPO – lasted 4 days and was attended by brands, designers, retailers, press etc. We were bombarded with interest in the vat of gooey d3o mash we had at the front of the stand and met so many amazing people who were interested in what d3o was and how it worked. More of the d3o team flew out over the week – you all know about Marcus attending for 30minutes before he had to jump on another flight back to be there for the birth of his first child – Xavier! – should have called him ISPO Marcus!

It was a very tired but happy ‘A’ team that took the stand down on Thursday after a very long and enjoyable week in Munich, so to treat ourselves we caught up with the boys, who had left earlier (Chris, Ed, Charles and Rob) on the slopes in Austria!! Home was an Aussie pub in St Johann called Bunny’s I had previously stayed in whilst travelling last summer. It was metres from the lift and bus transfers, minutes from the ski school/hire and best of all above an Aussie Bar for maximum beverage consumption and my chance to introduce the team to the wonders of the Jaeger Bomb.

We were pretty much an even split of boarders and skiers with Charlotte and Ade learning skiing for the first time and myself converting to the dark side of boarding and absolutely loving it! It was a great way to spend a few days destressing after ISPO and clearing our heads before flying back to the UK, excited to catch up with all the people we had met whilst at ISPO.

Again a massive thanks to everyone that was involved and especially the athletes – so many people commented on the athlete’s wall and the video so thank you!!

Now I’m back in the UK for a few weeks I’ll have loads of time to get back to bugging you all loads for your ski reports, videos, photos and general gossip – as well as launching some new bits for the site – keep a close eye towards the end of the this week!!

Cheers guys and hope you are all well, speak soon,

george

As if ISPO`s not enough excitement for this week, I travelled to Spain`s Calafat race track - 1hr and a half away from Barcelona - for the launch of Gore-Tex`s `One leather, all weather` material. In order to launch the amazing new leather, Gore Tex made 40 seeding garments which were tested out by some of the top journalists around Europe. The REALLY exciting thing for us however was that they used d3o™ as their protection of choice! Look our for pics from the day and of the very cool garments later.
Birds of Prey: Day 2

After a huge dump last night the going was spot on today. Blue skies, cool temp and sun all day meant that the course was in near perfect condition with only a few shadowy sections causing the racers some problems. The legend that is Bode Millar was up first in qualifying, racing for his new ‘Team America’ after a break away move from the US ski team. Bode pushed it to the limits, racing on the edge all the way down the course, which finally took its toll in the lower mid section where Bode over ran and crashed out. Overall it wasn’t the best day for the US athletes with sure favorite Stephen Nyman failing to qualify. However, Ted Ligety did make a top 10 finish with gold going to Switzerland’s Daniel Albrecht.

We also had a chance to catch up with some of the Speedfreak athletes today (top right, Abby Shettig and her sister Hayden – both absolute stars!!), and spent much of the event sticking stickers wherever possible! We even had the chance to meet some of the US team who are awesome and Stephen Nyman is sooo tall!! (bottom right!)

Unfortunately the end of the race today meant the end of the Birds of Prey event for Ruth and I as we had to head back down from the mountains to catch an early flight tomorrow over to the West Coast (smoking car on the way back meant that it was a bit of a close call). The postponed Men’s Super G is set to take place tomorrow (03/12/07) so we’ll update you with those reports when we get them in!!

I just wanted to drop you a quick blog to let you know what we`re up to at the moment as I know I haven`t been in touch for a while! Ruth and myself are over in the US so headed over to the Charles Schwab Birds of Prey ski world cup event at Beaver Creek, Colorado to catch up with the Spyder guys and the Speedfreaks, as well as checking out our first ski race!!

The USA`s Steve Nyman grabbed silver yesterday with Andrew Weibrecht running a breathtaking, on the edge of your seat race to finish 10 from a start in the fifties. His run was so heart stopping he`s now been dubbed `The Cardiac Kid` by the Spyder guys.

Today however the race was cancelled today due to too much snow so we made the most of it and got a few runs in with some amazing powder but some poor visability at the top. With the lifts opening and closing all day due to the ever changing conditions we were glad to get a few runs in early on. It`s looking like it might dump tonight which wont be great for race conditions tomorrow for the GS but fingers crossed there will be some action on the slopes - we`ll report back straight away with news from BC!!

We`re also over here to shout about the new Spyder`s brand new Speedfreaks campaign http://www.spyder.com/speed.index.asp - this project supports the top young skiers from all over the US, working with leading guys from the US ski teams such as Steve Nyman and Caitlin Ciccone. This is a great program and one that d3o fully supports with the Speedfreaks using true GS d3o suits specially made by Spyder!! Check out the site and keep up to date with what the freaks are up to - we`ll report on all the news from the guys!!

Be in touch soon!!

Training and Mental Preparation for Movement

Taken from http://www.parkourbrad.blogspot.com

The following is a little piece I wrote after training with a guy new to Parkour, I went through my thoughts before trying a movement I had not executed before, after, I decided to get my thoughts on Paper to share with you, as I feel they may help you through your training.

Training and Preparation for Movement.

Using basic psychological techniques within your training to overcome obstacles and the mental blocks surrounding them.

Thought Processes

When you come across a new situation through Parkour training (namely applying previously practiced movements to a new or different situation); effective mental processing is important, to eliminate certain fears about the movement and to gain the confidence to commit to a movement you know and feel to be within your ability but the mind is holding you back.

THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KNOWING YOU CAN DO SOMETHING AND COMMITTING TO IT REGARDLESS, AND `THROWING YOURSELF` AT A MOVEMENT AND SUCCEEDING.

Put simply you will learn very little from the latter, you would not be understanding the movement nor `listening` to your body, whereas pacing yourself through discipline and choice, means that when you are certain from similar experiences/movements, that you can make it, then you`ll learn a lot more, and would have overcome something more important than the movement itself.

[Those who are there and in that mindset, can hopefully understand this point already, those who aren`t at that level keep training safely and time will bring the insight.]

General Rules before executing the given movement.

1. -Worst Case Scenario- -

By assessing the mistakes that could be made we can realistically see potential threats/falls and before going through the movement and work on ways both physically and mentally to prepare and land safely from the failed movement if (in what should be an unlikely event), we are to make a mistake.

2. -Positive Outcomes-

Visualising and if possible, slowly rehearsing the movement in a controlled manner. This triggers the nervous system and to-be used muscles in to a state of readiness specifically for the movement to follow.

3. -Concentration-

Focus attention on what you have to do and accomplish, in order to execute the movement effectively and safely. Block out the factors that shouldn`t affect your performance and, importantly, be aware of other realistic factors that could be a danger or could interfere with the movement, such as birds, people, falling leaves, sticks etc.

4. -Last Minute checks-

The preparation phase before movement. Preparing hands, feet, and other used body parts for the movement to come (making sure hands are grippy and not sweaty, feet/shoes are good and ready for potential impacts etc).

Focus on where you are heading. Switching between visualising the movement and working out and adapting continually to where your hands will be going/being placed, where your feet are going (taking off and landing, tic-tac etc), what position your body will be in and how the movement should feel from past and similar experiences.

When you are ready and committed, execute!

The mind plays a key role over understanding current physical ability/readiness. Hopefully these techniques and thoughts before a given movement will help you in your training.

----

My training, after this rather intensive year of training and conditioning, I am starting to put a little more faith in my abbilities, something has changed and I now have an understanding or insight of what I am capable of, there`s more footage to come of things I;ve been training of late, only phone clips probably, but they`ll be added on the player above.

Any questions or please comment and ask away.

"Those who believe they can and those who believe they can`t, are both right" - Henry Ford

Law Enforcement Applications

I have been following the development of d3o for a while and I am convinced there may be several Law Enforcement related applications for the product. Obviously riot gear (as shown in your promo) would benefit enormously, and I can see the material used not only for uniform gear, but also to create lighter shields.
-- along these same lines, football referees might benefit from a d3o cap to thwart bottle throwing hooligans ;)

In terms of body armor I would assume that as an outer sheath for kelvar, the entire average vest weight could be substantually reduced. This is a major point for those of us who patrol in the Southern USA. It is extremely hot and humid here, so any reduction in weight would be a plus.

Gloves are a given; something similar to the kevlar weaves we use now for tactical/search teams. Things like fluid penetration resistance and cut/jab resistance would be great features here.

Does the material work against dog bites? If so, it could radically change the cumbersome gear used to train our K9 partners.

Ouside the box - if you coated a standard clipboard, it could double as an emergency battery shield during traffic stops and on-scene investigations.

I`m sure other officers out there have many more ideas, but perhaps these will get the ball rolling.

About 2 weeks ago we had the first dutch open timetrial championships for unicycles. We started on a 25km long dike and then finished the last 13km on land. I had the ideal starting position, at the back so I could spot everyone and go past them. My biggest competitor, a german rider called Jan Logemann started first and managed to stay ahead of me for 30km but I went past him at last and set down a time of 1.26.09h, an average of 26.5km/h which is I think one of the fastest average speeds recorded in a race. Many thanks to the ANP for the photo`s and all the other press for promoting unicycling as a real sport.

What may have been...

I`m sitting in Joshimath with Nick thinking over what may have been. I
suppose its hard to ask for success all the time but its always
disappointing when its not the way you dream. Nick and I spent 5days trying
the NE ridge line on Klanka. We started climbing the initial slopes on the
11th and moved up through the first rock band with some steep climbing. Our
first bivy was kinda small and the weather snowy with spindrift coming
pouring down the face, still the next day looked good and we pushed on. The
climbing was much the same and the next bivy was tiny, although the weather
was better we still had the spindrift and the night went by very slowly. The
3rd day saw us bail out to the ridge on the left hand side where deep snow
made going up very slow BUT at last a good Bivy spot. We stopped early and
dug a huge ledge, melted snow and generally recovered. It was great and
things were looking up. Day 4 saw me work up bottomless snow to the
shoulder. The view didn`t look good but Nick pressed on hoping for a nice
surprise. When Nick stopped in front of a huge snow mushroom and said "I
have no idea how to climb this" it kinda sunk in. The ridge ahead was a
nasty fluted overhung snowy grave. We looked at each other and had to say
nothing.

The next day and a half saw us escape back to ABC, the last night on the
face was a nightmare. Spindrift pummelled us both all night making cooking
almost impossible and sleep a joke. Stepping foot back on the glacier was a
relief but then it hit. Failure is a nasty word but one that has to be used
sometimes and I suppose it fits for this. We had time left to try another
route but this was the route we wanted, we dreamed off and now that dream
was shattered.
We spent 2 days at BC before leaving. The Dutch boys went back up and should
be climbing now and we wish them luck, but for us well we`re thinking of
home and what may have been.

Wow, it`s been a mad few weeks - so what have we been up to you`re asking...Well...

First there was the mountain bike world championships last weekend up in Fort William, Scotland - hello to everyone we met running around like wallies with our trusted shovel in tow - especially Dave and Jago, cheers for signing up guys!!! The whole event was brilliant and we had a great weekend catching up with the 661 guys and meeting all the athletes - as usual the Scottish weather was it`s usual cheery self but we were amazingly lucky and there was blue skies at points - check out some of the photos at our Facebook page - search for Dee Three-Oh, think a good time was had y all the team so have to say a huge thanks to them and John with his Angry Pirate impression - bosh! Podcast to be uploaded very shortly!!

Results wise the Great Britain team did brilliantly with a Gold in the junior men`s downhill with Ruairgh Cunningham, the first GB man to win, Silver in the junior women`s and Rachel Atherton and her brother Gee both winning with silver and bronze respectively in the elite womens and mens events - the atmosphere was electric and with the world championships for the XC, Trials and 4X taking place as well the whole event was buzzing!!

So on our jet setter lifestyles (only this month I promise!) Charlotte, Ruth, Rich and myself are now over in LA (we had one night at home) for Wired Next Fest 2007 which is absolutely awesome and such an honour to be a part of. We`re exhibiting in the design zone and the whole expo showcases amazing future technologies, it really is very cool - I`m running around like a headless chicken most of the time - some of the guys even met Buzz Aldren (sorry if I spelt it incorrectly) today - first man on the moon, how cool??!!

We`re here till Monday so I`ll blog up some of the photos when we get back to the hotel tonight - any reccommendations to see on my night off next week?? lol

Promise I`ll be in touch more regularly now - have found a reliable internet connection for free - shhh, don`t tell anyone!!

bye for now!

Sorry for the lack of updates but the weather has been so bad we have not been able to charge anything. Well at last Nick and I have been to about 6000m and feel ready for an alpine style push. The only problem is that I have come down with a nasty tooth ache. I think this is my wisdom teeth but not sure, to combat it I have taken enought drugs to kill a small horse, and now feel slighty better.
The weather has picked up as well and now we have long days of blue sky, but the nights are rather colder. There has also been the arrival of a Kiwi team and Indian police team so BC has become quite socialable. Even better when we beat the Indians at Cricket yesterday.!!

Nick and I are thinking about the climb and its looking good, its going to be the left hand ridge and I reckon we will leave in the next day or so, depending on the tooth of course. Both of us are in good form and begining to get the need to climb.

Stay cool for now

OK, I have skiing on the brain...perpetually. I`m looking forward to trying a d3o touque this year, since a helmet is impractical for me.

Well I thought of another way it could be used in skiing. This one would be of greatest benefit to telemarkers (free heel skiers), and snowboarders. I know there are already knee pads, and pants with knee pad inserts for them, but these are all rigid and none would be as comfortable as a d3o based pad.

Wednesday 29th August 2007

Awoke again to the pitter-patter of rain on my tent fly, for the last 36hrs it`s been non stop. Nick and I got back to BC yesterday after a wee walk up to a 6000m peak. We trotted round the corner for a few hours and climbed up to 5200m where we put up the tent for the night. Digging out some rocks for a tent platform I joined the lines of OAP`s by putting my back out. Nick found this quite funny as he was still reeling after I burnt him off walking up, and told me that this would slow me down and served my right. The afternoon and eve was spent listening to the rain and watching the water soaking through the tent and into our sleeping bags, which I for one found very enjoyable.

The following morning was horrid. N Wales has nothing on this place; the rain was replaced with sleet and thick cloud. We binned the idea of going up, and packed a wet tent before walking down. Returning to BC we reflected on what we had achieved; two soggy sleeping bags, a wet tent and a knackered back, not back for a 24hr trip for BC I think you would agree.

Today the Dutch went up to Depot camp while Nick and I hang out drinking coffee and spraying. The weather is minge and there is little sign of improvement. The one glimmer of hope today was that I had the Bob the Builder mug for tea this morning. I normally get Digimon or Pokemon mugs which spoils my day. Also Nick has finally shaken high altitude Malaria (aka the common sniffle) and is off antibiotics, this meant he could start on the high quality Indian whiskey that we have last night. It was purely for medicinal reasons of course

Plans? well they change by the hour so no point tell you really, I suppose it depends on my back and how much coffee we drink today.

Klanka 2

Hi Guys

Well this is a round up from the expedition of the last week, Nick Bullock and myself (along with two Dutch dudes) have finally got to basecamp. We arrived yesterday to misty damp conditions not unlike N Wales. The site of BC is pretty cool, a nice grassy meadow with some great views (when we can see anything) of some of the surrounding mountains. We can`t see Klanka yet but a short (3hr) walk up the glacier should give us views of the face.

This am has been spent setting up BC, I spent hours setting up the laptop, Rbgan, Solar panels and batteries only for none of it too work. I`ve no idea why and after leaving it for a couple of hours it all seemed to work, now that`s different to how things normally pan out!!

The hold ups in Josimath weren`t too bad in the end and after losing a day there we got the jeeps to the road head and started the walk in. As ever the porters were all pretty manic and somehow 25 loads became 35 but we didn`t mind as the price is per load and the porters were all good natured. The first day of walking was a steep uphill path, Nick and I got to the village pretty quickly but the 1500m height gain was telling and Nick had a headache that eve (to go with his cold although Nick thinks he has Maleria). We spent the night in a wee hut and yesterday saw a 4hr walk to BC.Again there was quite a steep path and as we got to BC both myself and Mike (Dutch guy) fell into a stream getting wet feet, Then to add insult to injury it started to rain. However we all quickly got tents up and soon the stove hummed and Herea (the cook) was serving tea.

Tomorrow will see us walking up glacier in a hope the clouds part and we can see the line.

Right I`m off to read my book and bask in the glory of getting all the electrics working

Kalanka Update

Hi all

Two days of bone crunching, back aching bus journey has seen us finally get to Joshimath. Yesterday we spent 16hrs on the bus stopping only a couple of times for food and cold drinks. We got to our overnight stop in Srinagar at about 8.30pm total spent both Nick and I showered and crashed out despite the heat. This morning we were in the Bus by 6am and we wound our way through the lush green foothills slowly gaining height. The road is pretty bloody exciting with huge drops down to the Ganga River and some huge landslides the bus was going over. Early afternoon saw us in Joshimath, where and we have quickly repacked things into porter loads in time for tomorrows jeep ride to the road head.

We start the walk in on Wed we hope and should be in BC a few days after that. This will be the last update till BC as all the computer equipment is safely packed away in the barrels. I`m writing this on the slowest of old dial ups in a funky dirty Internet place, the electricity keeps failing so I`m going to sign off before I lose it all.

Enjoy

I have just recently returned from England. I got to snowboard for 4 days, it had been 2 months since the last ride. I snowboarded in Castleford and Milton Keynes. View video in the video section. I had lots of fun at those places. Except for the one box managed to take a bite out of my board. I also went to Brighton for a few days and skateboarded and hung out at the beach. I also had the privilege to meet the d3o crew at the lab. I really enjoyed that. After our little visit to Brighton we went off to London for a few days. I skateboarded in front of St. Pauls Cathedral and the river boardwalk also the Palace.

hey guys, just reporting back from my most recent competition which was a few weeks back, but i was waiting for the resutls. Anyway, i managed to get 11th in the Elite Boarder-x and would have done better but due to one of my hubs cracking i fell off quite badly and only managed to finish 3rd so was knocked out in that quater final race. Also just to give an idea of how fast the Elite catagory is, i qualified 11th in the Elite and if that time was put into the Under 18`s (my age group) qualifying times i would have qualified 3rd.

was an amazing weekend which also included the world freestyle championships sponsered by fat face, which was incredible, people pushing our sport further and further, tricks including sweet 720`s laid out backflips and double backflips over huge 35ft tabletops. Check out some footage
